The bell signaling the end of class had barely faded when the classroom erupted into noise. At its center, raised slightly above the floor, was the boys' protective bubble – a transparent acrylic box. Inside, a few boys jostled and laughed. But someone shoved too hard; an elbow struck out, and several
tiny figures lost their balance, tumbling helplessly over the box's edge.
The world outside the sanctuary abruptly unfolded before them. Beneath their feet lay polished wooden floorboards, reflecting the harsh fluorescent lights above and the kaleidoscope of movement overhead. Uniform fabrics swayed gently with each step. Sounds filtered out within the bubble now crashed over them: the sharp clack of heels, the soft rustle of skirts, and the distant murmur of conversation merged into a dizzying roar.
The boys sprawled on the floor, momentarily forgetting their fear, forgetting to scramble back to safety. Instead, they craned their necks greedily, eyes glued to the shifting shadows beneath the swaying skirts, desperately trying to catch a forbidden glimpse into that hidden world.
Suddenly, an immense shadow fell over them.
Light vanished. A wind smelling faintly of leather and fabric pressed down, threatening to flatten them. They looked up in terror to see a vast, smooth curve of black suspended less than a centimeter above their heads. The shoe hovered for a fraction of a second, then slammed down, its target precisely the boy who had been staring up most intently. He didn't even
manage a full cry.
Squelch.
The rubber heel crushed his fragile body instantly. Dark red liquid burst out under the immense pressure, forming a small, rapidly spreading stain.
Time seemed to freeze. The two remaining boys stood rigid, minds blank. The companion who had just been breathing, laughing, peering beside them was gone in an instant. Only a few strands of dark red gore and viscous fluid clung to the edge of the heel, and the rapidly cooling, filthy smear on the floor remained.
The massive shoe lifted slowly, stringy trails of dark red tissue stretching and dripping onto the floor. Its owner had apparently reached her destination and paused, shifting her weight back slightly, the front of her foot lifting just a touch. The heel that had just obliterated a life now hung suspended in the air, the pulped remains swaying almost imperceptibly with the girl's minute movements.
One boy knelt directly in the shadow cast by that slightly raised heel, gazing up in abject terror. He strained to see higher, but his vision barely reached the revolting mess clinging to the sole. Beyond that, nothing. He couldn't see her face, couldn't see her expression. Was she frowning? Biting her lip
in concentration? He had no idea. He only knew that the boy who had just been peering into skirt shadows with him was now smeared, in the most degrading way possible, into the treads of this girl's elegant loafer.
The other survivor reacted completely differently. He threw himself face down onto the floor, forehead slamming against the wood with frantic force. He kowtowed desperately towards the loafer that had taken his friend's life, repeating the gesture of ultimate submission as if it were his only lifeline.
The shoe's owner, of course, remained utterly unaware of the desperate life-and-death drama unfolding beneath her sole. She was standing beside the desk of the girl she had a crush on. Clutching a soft, sweet-potato-shaped stress toy, her fingers squeezing it tightly with nervous energy, she tilted her head slightly, a shy expression on her face as she quietly asked for help with a math problem.
The girl being asked looked down at her workbook, about to explain.
Perhaps the imminent answer made her even more nervous. Maybe the misshapen stress toy in her hand offered a tiny anchor. Unconsciously, the girl adjusted her stance. The foot that had been slightly raised relaxed..
. and came down.
Tap.
A soft sound. Lost completely in the classroom's background noise.
The boy kneeling in the shadow vanished instantly as the descending shoe covered him completely. Immense pressure crushed down from above, plunging his world into darkness. His body shattered and collapsed under the irresistible force, merging seamlessly with the first stain left by his companion on the wooden floor. More dark red liquid seeped from the edges of the sole, expanding the smear slightly.
The girl's foot settled firmly on the ground. She felt absolutely nothing of the insignificant change beneath her. Her attention was entirely focused on the classmate in front of her.
A simple, unconscious shift of weight to ease her nerves – the most ordinary of small movements – had also ended the life of a human being kneeling at her feet...
Seemingly satisfied with the answer, the loafer, now smeared with gore, lifted naturally and stepped away.
One step. Two steps.
The shoe walked through the mingled remains of the two boys, dragging streaks of dark red residue across the floor, leaving rapidly drying trails. With each step the girl took, the final traces of the tiny lives caught in the tread
s were scraped, smudged, and gradually erased.
They would eventually become insignificant dust trapped in the shoe's crevices, or leave faint, unnoticed marks on the floor, ultimately worn away completely by the mundane act of walking. Not even worthy of being a noticeable stain.
...
When men worldwide were shrunk, the school authorities had fierce debates during the early days of implementing "Coexistence Education." Adaptation ultimately won out. Placing the shrunken boys within the girls' active zones was touted as eliminating size discrimination and fostering shared learning progress. But this wasn't driven by any fantasy of equality or care. It was simply to make the girls accustomed to their presence, accustomed to their insignificance, accustomed to the inevitable... accidental attrition.
At first, there were gasps. There was something called "guilt." But time is the most potent solvent. An unintentional turn, a casual step, every trivial contact silently reshaped the boundaries of perception. Those tiny existences vanished so easily, so inconsequentially.
"Oops, sorry..."
"Ah! Didn't see you there..."
"They're just too tiny! Really, it's impossible to notice..."
Apologies g
radually turned into resignation. Resignation settled into a taken-for-granted indifference. After all, stepping on an ant requires no explanation!
